Company History

1992:
Based on an existing engineering firm for developing medical devices, Helga and Friedrich Raith established IMM Messtechnologie GmbH. A 14 m² basement room, which belonged to their apartment in Unterschleissheim, served as their first workshop. Half a year later the pair moved into a terraced house in the same neighborhood. The new home allowed an increase in the size of workshop and office to 50 m².
The power measuring instrument for photodynamic laser therapy, which up to this point had been developed in cooperation with GSF (now Helmholtz Zentrum), could not be advanced and marketed further due to delays in the approval process of the substances required for the therapy. At the same time, along with developing laser power measuring instruments, the firm began to distribute laser diodes and optics.
Since 1993 IMM has been distributing laser diodes made by SANYO. The development of laser diode collimators and modules began at the same time as the distribution of laser diodes.

1994:
The company’s healthy growth made it necessary to hire its first employee in October 1994.
At the same time the company moved into a new space, located in Carl-von-Linde-Straße 40 in Unterschleissheim. By the end of 1994 the production of laser diode collimators and modules required the hiring of another two employees.

1995:
Helga Raith joined the company and took over the position of commercial and staff manager.
Until the year 2000 the company expanded and gradually more rooms were rented.

1998:
The patent for a universal glass fiber connection was granted. In combination with its quality, this property right is an essential factor for the success of our fiber tester product family which is distributed worldwide.

2000:
The continuing strong growth in combination with a shortage in skilled human resources and a lack of suitable locations in the Munich metropolitan area made the management consider looking for a manufacturing location outside of Munich. The result of the search was to set up a production facility in Viechtach in the Bavarian Forest, around 170 km northeast of Munich. The main reasons to go there were the ready availability of a motivated and highly-qualified workforce and space to expand. On 1 July 2000, the manufacturing location in Viechtach started its operation. The premises were enlarged several times. Today the location consists of a 200 m² administrative and service area and a 600 m² workshop.

2005:
Certification in accordance with ISO 9001:2000.

2006:
Soon enough, the premises in Unterschleissheim became too small again. With no additionally available rooms in Carl-von-Linde-Straße, the next move was necessary and the firm moved into a commercial building in Ohmstraße 4 in Unterschleißheim. The new office size was 540 m².

2008:
IMM Messtechnologie GmbH became IMM Photonics GmbH. The new company name combines the nature of our business with our international focus.

2010:
The premises in Unterschleißheim were expanded to ca. 728 m².
Christian Raith is the third member of the owning and managing family to join the company.
Certification in accordance with ISO 9001:2008.
